Mumbai, India’s Urbs Prima in Indis (Foremost City in India) is blessed with a natural harbour and owes a lot of its fortunes to this harbour. Maritime trade and activity have been a major underlying factor as the city over millennia metamorphosed through its various avatars; from Heptaneasia to Bombaim to Bom Bahia to Bombay to Mumbai. Despite having rich recorded maritime history since the 12th century, it is indefensible that Mumbai does not yet have a permanent Maritime Museum.
MMMS proposes to partner with the Maritime History Society to establish a Maritime Museum at Oyster Rock for the city of Mumbai showcasing its golden maritime past, present and future to provide a Modern and Immersive Museum Experience drawing upon the tenets to Inform, Immerse & Inspire (I3). The display and galleries will strike a healthy balance between the traditional museum experience and a technology driven immersive, experiential and participative experience without losing focus of history and historical facts. The Museum will be predominantly youth centric yet appeal to all ages. The Museum also intends having a robust education outreach programme through which it will connect with the citizens of the city and beyond and make it completely accessible.
