Shipbuilding and ship repair have been unseen but flourishing industries in Mumbai for nearly three centuries now. The dockyards that initially built small sailing vessels now build modern, state-of-the-art warships and submarines. With the advent of the steam engine to propel ships in the mid-19th century, a paradigm shift in shipbuilding occurred at Bombay (now Mumbai) which also had major geopolitical ramifications. Shipbuilding methodology and technology has since undergone multiple evolutions from steam engines to the ultra-modern gas turbine technology of today. Cdr. Ninad Phatarphekar (Retd.) takes us on the second leg of a voyage of discovery of Mumbai’s shipbuilding history since the building of the first steamship to the present day.
