Maratha Armar

‘Aarmar’ was the naval arm of the Maratha empire. It comes from Portuguese word ‘Armada’ which means an ‘armed fleet’. Krishnaji Anant Hireparkhi, a contemporary courtier and the first biographer of Shivaji, calls it ‘army at sea’. While Ramchandrapant Amatya, another contemporary statesman, calls it an ‘independent arm of the State’. But what was the Maratha Navy or Aarmar? Contrary to popular notion, for most of its existence, the Maratha Navy was never a single monolithic entity. It consisted of various independent fleets which reported to different authorities, with different zones of operations and in some instances, even fought against one another. This presentation by Pratish Khedekar intends to introduce these various Navies which existed throughout the existence of the Maratha Empire, and beyond.
