MMMS Tilawa

November 23, 2022 marks 80 years since the S.S.Tilawa was torpedoed and sunk off Seychelles, by a submarine during WWII. The British India Steam Navigation Company liner S.S. Tilawa, on the evening of November 20, 1942, set sail from Ballard Pier Bombay, for Durban, South Africa via the Seychelles, Mombasa and Maputo, carrying 958 passengers and a cargo of 6000 tons, which included 60 tons of silver bullion for the South Africa Mint. 678 persons were rescued by the British warship HMS Birmingham and brought back to Bombay's Ballard Pier on November 27, 1942. Mr Nichhabhai Chibabhai Solanki was one of the passengers, who unfortunately perished in this tragedy. The father-son duo of Mukesh and Emile Solanki, his descendants, will host the event on November 23, 2022 at the iconic Grand Hotel for the 80th Commemoration of S.S.Tilawa to acknowledge and memorialize the loss of lives. The last known survivor, Mr. Arvindbhai Jani who was 3 years old at the time, will also be present. S.S.Tilawa was located in December 2014 at the wreck site along with her cargo of 2364 bars of silver by London-based Argentum Exploration Ltd. For more details on this story please visit www.tilawa1942.com THIS EVENT IS BY INVITATION ONLY She set sail for Durban from Ballard Pier at 17:00 on Nov 20,1942 with 958 passengers and 6000 tonnes of cargo on board. Tragically she did not make it to her destination as she was torpedoed and sunk off the coast of Seychelles by a Japanese submarine on the night of Nov 23, 1942, in the wake of WWII. 280 passengers unfortunately met with a watery grave, while 678 survived and were rescued by British warships HMS Birmingham and SS Carthage and brought back to Ballard Pier on Nov 27, 1942. @maritimemms and @tilawa1942 came together to commemorate this loss on its 80th anniversary and to share this tragic story with the world. The air at the @grandhotelmumbai1922 that evening was indeed filled with poignancy. 83 years old Arvind Jani from UK, who was known to be the lone survivor of this tragedy till that evening, graced the occasion along with His Majesty's British Deputy High Commissioner Mr. Alan Gemmel, several other dignitaries and tilawa families. The far and wide reach and acknowledgement of the tragedy, has opened many new doors of research and discovery leading to two more survivors being located, one in the USA and one in Gujarat. Our team @maritimemms organised for @tilawa1942 founders visits to the Indian Sailor's Home, where they found names of two Tilawa Sailor's in their records.A harbour cruise around the Ballard Pier, a Press conference at the Press Club and a radio interview with @hrishikay on @94.3radiooneindia were organized to raise awareness and to give all the required attention to the Tilawa tragedy. The commemorative event has now led to a further quest for finding answers to many unanswered questions related to the Tilawa tragedy. MMMS sends all its good wishes to the Tilawa team for all its future endeavours and research.
