The island city of Mumbai, then known as Bombay, was a thriving port due to its favourable location and natural harbour. The sea and its proximity was thus a major influence on the architecture of this coastal city which persisted beyond the various architectural styles, including Victorian, Indo-Gothic, Neo-classical, Indo-Saracenic, to give a unique character to the built form which was functional and meaningful.
In this virtual event titled “Sea and its influence on the architecture of Mumbai”, Atul Kumar the Founder Trustee of Art Deco Mumbai will take us through a visual presentation of Mumbai’s relationship with the sea and its representation through nautical features in the city and how these insertions make the Art Deco buildings in Mumbai so unique.
