The Untired Defenders

The Portuguese Estado da India controlled a fertile and resourceful strip of coastal land in North Konkan Region from Chaul to Daman and its immediate surroundings making this Portuguese settlement the largest one outside their headquarters in Goa in Medieval India, remnants of which are still found in this region. Their structural, architectural and artistic activities carried a blend of the indigenous techniques and traditions, forming a distinct Indo-Portuguese cultural identity. The Portuguese had to struggle a lot to protect their hard-earned settlements, which they did with a combination of advanced military technology, naval power and more importantly with a chain of unique Defence structures which they had constructed across the region under their control. These sturdy Defence structures in the form of forts, fortresses, bastions and watchtowers refusing to surrender from their duty even today, form the story of these Untired Defenders.
