Cannons of Mumbai

The discovery of two cannons in Reynolds colony Wadala , by the Directorate of Archaeology and Museums accelerated the documentation work of cannons lying in the vicinity of the Fort area where Bombay Castle once stood. This survey carried out in South Mumbai over a period of two months led to the documentation of 27 cannons, the locations of which shed some light on the shoreline defence strategies, their role in the development of artillery in India and their importance in military history of the island city of Mumbai. Once weapons of mass destruction, prone to natural hazards and human vandalism, these archaeological records are today either lying in disuse and neglect, or are adorned as bollards, trophies, decorations at crossroads and even as objects of worship ! During the World War era, batteries were built along the coastline of the islands of Mumbai. Today’s talk offers glimpses of this archaeological record which has fallen silent and needs to be preserved for posterity.
