The rise and fall of Mahim, located at the north end of one of the islands of thearchipelago, is a significant chapter in Mumbai’s history. With a life span of almost 500 years, Mahim witnessed the changing historical geographies of the region. It was not just a significant port situated amidst the palm groves at the entrance of the tidal lagoon, but also a strategic location with Salsette to the north and Mumbai Island to the south. The geography that made the birth of this multicultural microcosm possible also became responsible for its death. The present talk attempts to narrate the origins, locational significance, physical and navigational environs, trade, and decay of Mahim from a historical geographical perspective.
