Bombay that was, Mumbai That is

In this walkthrough, we shall look at the various forms of imagery that depicted Mumbai as it evolved from Heptanesia to Bombaim into Bombay. Bombay’s maritime depiction starts in earnest with the Portuguese, that were more concerned with sailing safely into harbours rather than the accuracy of locations that the British were later obsessed with, which led to the formation of a standardized East India Pilot sailing manual, once the Company took over. From starting out as a fledgling outpost in the 17th century, we shall look through some of the little surviving 18th century views of a burgeoning maritime township, the complete development of the harbour & construction of new docks in the 19th century and finally, seeing the use of water for recreational purposes such as formation of the yacht clubs, regattas, etc in the 20th c.
