Vasaicha Killa

From ancient Vasya to present day Vasai through Basai, Baxay, Bacaim, Bajipur, Bassein ; Vasai has not only undergone many name changes but has also changed many hands of rulers and seen many battles & treaties as well. Vasai, located on the banks of river Ulhas on the Arabian coast, once stood as the proud Northern capital of the Portuguese territory in India. Although Vasai came into prominence during the Portuguese period of occupation, it was already a bustling market town and a sea port trading in ship timber & building stone under the Gujarat Sultanate. Spread over 110 acres, Vasai was a citadel fort built by the Portuguese in 1536. The presence of the Portuguese significantly shaped the region into what it is today. Though today we can explore that citadel town of Bassein only through its ruins. The walk will be led by local residents Megha Kamothi Fernandes and Pascal Lopes.
