Amidst sylvan surroundings of Nhava, nestles a beautiful 19th century heritage residence of Bomanjee Hormusjee Wadia, a member of the illustrious ship building Wadia family, which was later occupied by the Yusuf family and today it stands as T S Rahaman Marine Museum, the first of its kind in India. Haji Ismail Yusuf, belonging to a family of seafarers, was the pioneer of an indigenous shipping enterprise across the harbour and the coast known as The Bombay Steam Navigation Company way back in 1865. His son Sir Mohamed Yusuf continued the legacy and established a small museum in 1912 with his personal collection more as a tool of education for the students of the marine school. Today it is the oldest maritime museum with a diverse collection of artifacts belonging to Sir Mohamed Yusuf Seamen Welfare Foundation, Nhava, showcasing India's rich maritime history of over 4 millennia.
