Khanderi Island

Khanderi, located off the coast of Maharashtra, to the South of Mumbai, was an important island fort of the Maratha Empire in Alibag, under the eminent leadership of Maynak Bhandari and Darya Sarang Daulat Khan in the seventeenth century, built to keep check on the Siddis, the Portuguese and the British. The expansion of Maratha navy continued under the leadership of Sarkhel Kanhoji Angre in the early eighteenth century from the ramparts of this same fort. Khanderi island also houses a lighthouse, today renamed as The Kanhoji Angre Lighthouse. Built by the British in 1867, it marks the Southern Boundary of the Mumbai Port and guides ships approaching the Mumbai harbour to safety. On our visit to Khanderi island, we will get to explore many fascinating facets of the Maratha & especially the Angre history .
