Thane's Golden Mile

Thriving between the 6th and 13th centuries AD, a medieval port that rose into prominence with the decline of the Kalyan port, Thane was famed for its prosperity acquired through its flourishing maritime trade and networks of the pre-colonial age. A riverine port with 4 bunders and an added advantage of a two way access, Thane was known for its considerable sea traffic with notable imports of gold, silver, bronze & Arab horses and an export of brown incense, cotton cloth and leather goods among other things. Sri-Sthanaka or Sthan meaning settlement, Thane was a true settlement and a home to a demographic that was multi-religious, multi-racial & multi-cultural.  Although the age of communications, transport, urban development, reclamations and siltation saw the slow death of Thane port, the plurality of its culture continues to manifest in its structures that still stand tall almost in a row in the heart of the city.
