Tranquebar

This is the story oftheDanish presence in the Bay of Bengalfrom 1616 to 1845. The first cycle of sagas (1616-1650) describes the Danske Ostindisk Kompagni, that secured a trading post in Tranquebar, India, but faced challenges from European rivals and local rulers. The second cycle of sagas (1670-1729) saw a revival of the DEIC, as it benefited from European conflicts by offering a neutral flag for trade. The third cycle (1732-1845) witnessed the most success for the DEIC, rebranded as the Asiatic Company. The talk will focus on the various strategies used by the Danes to survive, including privateering, the slave trade and the exploitation of various conflicts among the European powers trading with the East.
