S S Dwarka was the second of four of British India Steam Navigation Company's D Class passenger liners built in the aftermath of WWII to service passenger routes in the Persian Gulf. She carried Indian migrant workers to the Gulf for decades and was also a witness to historic events like the Partition. Based in Bombay, her original voyage circuit was Bombay - Karachi - Gwadar - Muscat - Bahrain - Kuwait - Abadan - Basra, a pattern for 36 years of her career. Used for location filming of ‘Gandhi,’ her last voyage ended in Bombay in 1982, ending an era of slow travel taking this kind of experience out of the reach of ordinary travellers.
